Music is a great way to bring your family together and create lasting memories. Here are some ways your family can bond over music:
Start a Rock Band: Bring out the pots and pans and make some noise! You can also make guitars out of rubber bands and flutes out of plastic bottles (see below) and have a full band.
Put on that music and DANCE: Your kids won’t care if you are an awful dancer, they’ll just love that you’re dancing. Being goofy with your kids can let them see a new, fun side of you.
Make up a song: If your family is comprised of creative types, make up a song! You can each make up a song surrounding one common theme, say “family”. Then, you can all show off the song you made. To make it a little more interesting, you each can sing with a different genre: country, soft rock, or rap!
Make a Song Book: Take a small notebook and decorate it with markers, crayons, or any arts and crafts. Then, you can write your favorite childhood songs (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, etc.) in the booklet. If you are stuck in traffic or bored at home, your child can take out the booklet and sing their favorite songs. While your child is having fun singing his/her favorite songs, he/she is also developing reading skills!
Here are a couple musical crafts that your family can do together:
Make a Guitar: Take an empty and clean one half-gallon milk container and cut a small hole in the lower half of the container. Then, take rubber bands and wrap them around the container, over the hole. When you strum the bands, they should make sounds! It’s easy, cheap, and fun.
Flutes: To make a flute-like sound, collect several empty plastic soda (or narrow necked) bottles. When you are ready to make the flutes, fill them all up with different amounts of water. Then, gently blow on the top of each bottle and they should make sounds. The ones with the least amount of water will make low tone sounds and the bottles with the most amount of water will make high pitched sounds. It’s that easy and really fun.
